about

BlastOff Heads formed early in 1997 and debuted on stage on Valentine's Day of that year at the legendary 15th Street Tavern.
We recorded this album in the winter of 97/98. Basic tracks were recorded on stage at an empty Bluebird Theatre and overdubs & mixing were completed at Big Bad Bob's house. I remember having a house party the night before recording the vocals and being very hoarse and dehydrated-maybe you can hear that...I sang the odd tracks, Brian sang on the evens. It was a fun record to make, and Bob really got into producing the big outro on the final track.
It was later chosen in a Westword year-end issue as one of the best local CD's that year.

Here's the Westword review from when the CD was released:
"Thanks to co-producer/engineer Bob Ferbrache, Making H Sounds from BlastOff Heads sounds cheap in all the right ways. The guitar tone is edgy but clean, the rhythm section is sloppy but effective, and the generally strong melodies are never lost in the mayhem. As a result, the trio of Hendrick, Morrison and McDermott proves to be good company, tossing out catchy/punky noisemakers like "Waxed," "BlastOff Heads' Theme Song" and the aptly named "Toetapper" with ease. Nonetheless, they've clearly got their hands full: Why else start the disc with "Something to Jerk for Now" and end it with "Something to Jerk for Later"? Pump it up, gentlemen"

...and from the Westword year-end issue:
"According to most indie-rock fans, too much production is a bad thing--and usually, they're right. Nonetheless, getting a clean, crisp sound that stops well short of slickness is important, as renowned Denver dial-twister Bob Ferbrache knows. On Making H Sounds, he keeps the focus on the BlastOff Heads' guitars and beats, and by doing so, he ensures that songs like "Toetapper" will actually cause toes to tap. Entertaining, energetic, and straight to the point."
